Sumpter Volunteer Fire Department Search and Rescue

Sumpter Fire Department volunteers attended a search and rescue class at the Sumpter Community Schoolhouse recently.  The class was taught by Wayne Inman of the Search and Rescue Department of the Baker County Sheriff’s Office.  A large part of the fire department volunteers also belong to the Sumpter Valley Blue Mountain Snowmobile Club which plays an important part in the search and rescue of the Sumpter area. Their collective experience in snowmobiling is very important too.  Volunteers received instruction in setting up and maintaining a search and rescue base and it was decided that the Sumpter Community Schoolhouse would be the base for future rescue operations in the area. The snowmobile club makes it’s Tucker Snocat Trail Grooming machine available to the County and the grooming crew is prepared for a search and rescue mission at all times.

Here are a few important lists that were prepared by the Search and Rescue office, as well as the Panhandle Snowmobile Club in Halfway, Oregon. Just click on the links and you can keep these important lists for future reference!

Sumpter Snowshoeing

Sumpter Snowshoeing Dec 26th, 2012

Whoopee!

First time on snowshoes this season…..lots of fresh powder and just about a month earlier than last season!

2

For the first snowshoe hike of the season, I chose the Sumpter Flea Market Grounds Trail. This will be the trail we will use for the New Year’s Eve hike. Details here. It is not a very long trail….approximately 2 miles or so. I stay fairly close to the western edge of the meadows, heading South for about 150 yards.  This is a popular playground for snowmobilers..so it is always best to stay along the edge of the meadows as you head away from the Flea Market Grounds.

4

Every year….I end up waiting to strap on the snowshoes for so long….that I have forgotten that I haven’t been on the trails since February! So the first hike is usually a fresh reminder of what it is like to break a new trail through knee-deep, soft snow.

Snowmobile trails often come in handy as a relief from the hard work of breaking trail.  Just be sure you don’t see or hear any snowmobiles in the immediate area, then if you’re lucky, the trail will be going the same way you are! You know those snowmobilers…they don’t always ride in a straight line….!  :)

5

One of the things I like about this trail is the historic Monighan Dragline that is parked at the Cracker Creek Museum of Mining. The trail brings you right through this unique outdoor museum..and since you are already wearing snowshoes….it’s kind of fun to take a few minutes to explore before continuing on the trail!  (and it also a great place to take a breather if you need one too!) Just be careful not to get too close to the equipment as there may be hazards that you cannot see under the deep snow.

6If historic mining equipment interests you….be sure to plan a trip to Sumpter in the summer season so you can get a real good look at the all the rustic mining equipment! Watch for the Cracker Creek Museum website coming soon!

Sumpter Snowshoeing Dec 26th, 2012

As you continue on the trail from the museum…you will notice the Sumpter Blue Mountain Snowmobile Club Groomer Shed.  This is where the big orange monster lives! Learn more about the local snowmobile club here.

7

You usually can follow the Snocat Groomer trail to the highway….be very careful of traffic from both directions and…..be very careful as you cross the highway as the pavement can be tricky with snowshoes.

9

10

Once across the highway, you can pick up the snowmobile trail again as it runs parallel to the highway.

11

You will now find yourself on the west side of the highway, with both the Sumpter Valley Dredge, and the Sumpter Valley Railroad tracks on your left. This sign is a great check point to ensure you are still on the right trail.  If you happen to be on the trail deeper in the season, you may not see anything but the speed sign!

13

This is an awesome view of the Sumpter Valley Dredge. Many years ago…there used to be a road at this point that served as the entrance to the State Park. These days, the trail stays on the East side of the park and the railroad tracks.  At this point, you are back to sharing the trail with snowmobilers so be listening and watching for the rest of the hike! Normally, the trail will take you on up to the Sumpter Railroad Depot, but on this first hike of the season, I decided to cut across to the State Park Office and finish the hike.

14

The best part of any snowshoe hike in Sumpter….is the fresh hot chocolate at the end of the trail!

15Don’t forget the Annual New Year’s Eve Snowshoe hike on Monday, Dec 31st!  We will be meeting at the Sumpter Flea Market Grounds!

See you on the trail!

Sumpter Valley Railroad

The Sumpter Valley Railroad is looking for someone in Sumpter who would be interested in shoveling snow at the Sumpter Train Depot this winter. They will trade a 2013 season pass for any regular trains in exchange for the work.

The work will involve shoveling snow off the platform only….there will be no need to shovel snow from the roof.

Anyone interested in this job…..please contact Debi Bainter at 541-523-5855 or send her an email:  debi@visitbaker.com

Sumpter Food Drive

The Annual Food Drive was a great success this year thanks to volunteers who spent time sorting and delivering food received from the generous donations of the community!

Sumpter should be proud of itself for rising above disagreements caused by local politics in order to help those in the community who need it!

Following Thanksgiving, donation boxes were placed at local businesses in the community to accept food donations.

Sumpter would like to gratefully acknowledge all volunteers, as well local businesses for all their help:

The Elkhorn Saloon, Scoop-N-Steamer, The Gold Post, The Stage Stop, The Sumpter Municipal Museum, Homestead Realty….

And especially Santa Claus for helping us deliver the boxes!

Snowmobile Club Christmas Gift Exchange

The Sumpter Valley Blue Mountain Snowmobile Club held it’s annual Christmas Gift Exchange.  The fun began when club members gathered for a wonderful potluck with favorite donated side dishes that complimented the delicious ham provided by the club.  There was a meeting following the meal….but for some reason – the meeting didn’t last very long (seems like it never does!)

Once the tables dishes were cleared…the real fun began of exchanging Christmas gifts!

Sumpter Valley Dredge & Sumpter Valley Railroad Video

We received this from Ri Stewert of Blue Dot Productions:

Greetings Sumpter!

I thought you two would like to see the finished product for the composition “Thorn” that we shot at the Dredge this summer.

We also did a music video a few years ago at the Sumpter Railroad that you are welcome to share, or put on your sites.

We’re very happy with it, and have fond memories of working there. What an unbelievable set! We have been including links to your websites wherever we can.

Feel free to post anywhere, and everywhere.

Thanks again!

Sumpter Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting

The Annual Sumpter Christmas Parade was bigger and better than ever last weekend! Thanks to all those who participated and especially to the volunteers who worked so hard to organize all the fun!

The Grand Marshals of the Sumpter Christmas Parade this year were Jack and Ona Smith but their “sleigh” was one of the Sumpter Volunteer Fire Department trucks!

Following a great parade….folks gathered at the Sumpter Christmas Tree to sing carols and enjoy some hot chocolate and cookies.  It was good to see so many friends and neighbors joining each other for an old-fashioned community Christmas celebration!
