Members of the Sumpter Volunteer Fire Dept. will be cooking up some tasty hot dogs for everyone playing Bingo this week ~ and they’re free!

The guys are just itching to get their hands on the grill again. This gives them a chance to warm up their skills at the grill for the 2013 Memorial Day Flea Market where they will be once again selling hot dogs to raise money for the SVFD.

SVBMSC – April 13th, 2013

The winter is over, (just don’t let those occasional spring snow showers fool you.)

Hamburgers were on the grill dispite the cold weather at the Sumpter Community Schoolhouse recently as the The Sumpter Valley Blue Mountain Snowmobile Club held it’s last meeting of the 2012/2013 season.

Club members elected officers for the 2013/2014 season. There wasn’t a lot of time spent on elections however, because current officers were nominated and accepted.

Just because the slippery white stuff has disappeared, doesn’t mean the SVBMSC stops working….

Sumpter Valley Dredge

Spring is here…!  That not only means the snow is gone and we can all see our grass…but it also means it’s just about time for the Sumpter Valley Dredge State Heritage Area season to open on May 1st.

Before the gates will be open at the State Park however,  Friends of The Dredge will hold it’s Annual Meeting at the Sumpter Community Schoolhouse.  The public in invited.

Members will be voting for new board members. Anyone interested in serving with other volunteers in the ongoing restoration and preservation of the Sumpter Valley Dredge are encouraged to attend.

Can you believe it…..?

The snow is melting and temperatures are on the rise……and just like last year,  the snowmobile season has gone by faster than a snowmobile running down hill on snow!

The final meeting of the Sumpter Valley Blue Mountain Snowmobile Club will be……….

The club will be providing BBQ hamburgers and members are welcome to bring their favorite side dish.  There will be a dessert auction as well. Members will also be electing new officers for the 2013/2014 season.

This is the last regular meeting of the 2012/2013 snowmobile season, but the club will still be keeping in touch with members through the summer months with occasional newsletters to keep you informed of club news.

The Grooming Crew will be busy all summer maintaining the Tucker SnoCat Groomer, as well as working on the trails – who needs snow?

Sumpter is all about potlucks!

You can hear people swapping recipes at almost every potluck. So it seems only natural that Sumpter should have a community cookbook

This cookbook will be different than most you’ve likely seen…..because this cookbook will have only recipes of dishes made for potlucks.

The SVFD Auxiliary will be selling these books as fundraisers for the SVFD. Visit the SVFD Auxiliary here.

Sumpter Oregon Post Office

After consideration of customer feedback, a community meeting, and the operational needs of the U.S. Postal Service, it has been determined that there will be reduced hours at the Sumpter Post Office. Visit the Sumpter Post Office here.

Beginning April 6th, 2013, the new hours for the Sumpter Post Office will be as follows: Monday – Friday, 9:30 to 4:00 pm, lunch will be from 1:00 pm to 1:30 pm. Saturday hours will remain the same…10:00 am to 11 am.

We will still have 24 hour access to our mail.

Sumpter Outhouse Races Feb 16th, 2013

As part of Sumpter’s Poker Run festivities on Feb 16, Sumpter’s 1st Annual Outhouse Contest, Races, & Performances (OCR&P) were held on Sat afternoon. Five outhouses were entered: NASA, High Fire Danger, Ol’ Yeller, Canucopia, and NBC. Canucopia, “Smells as Sweet as Roses,” a pale sky-blue structure adorned with both painted and silk flowers, was voted favorite outhouse and received a trophy and $25, both were provided by the Sumpter Valley Blue Mountain Snowmobile Club.

Each team was made up of an outhouse, two pushers, and a seat-sitter. The racing track was a loosely packed half block of run on either side of Centre Street from Sumter St (yes, that’s how they’re spelled on the plat) to the alley between Sumter and Granite and back again. The tight turn around the cone at the alley end was where the most entrancing performances occurred and the lives of many seat-sitters flashed before their eyes. Happily, some seat-sitters were provided with both helmet and toilet paper. Other death-defying performances happened in the deep snow to the outside of the track, usually when one pusher pushed harder than the other pusher, pushing pokey pusher into patella-deep plush, er, slush.

Spectators could scarcely contain themselves. So after entrants had run the track with their outhouses, random teams of spectators commandeered outhouses to post times. Footwear traction ranged from golf cleats to snow boots to sneakers. Advice was piled deep on later pushers, and they bore down with great effort.

Team Steep n Deep–pushers Megan Stowell and Chase Tanner, seat-sitter Annie Rudd, and coach, Braden Tanner, running alongside–placed 3rd with a time of 1:27. They received a trophy and $50 donated by Tasha’s Treasures, represented by Tasha Clarke. Second place, with a time of 1:22, went to Team Over the Hill–pushers Kurt Clarke and Lee German, seat-sitter Tasha Clarke. Their trophy came with $75 donated by Homestead Realty, owner Michaelle Clarke. Team Donikers posted a very fast 1:16.5 to take first, a trophy, and $100–donated by Clarke Construction, owner Cary Clarke–to be split amongst pushers Shasta Moser, Matt Moser, and seat-sitter Eric Rasmussen.

The women’s division was made up of two teams of spectators, aged 50 to 74. One lady on each team wore a 3/4 length skirt. Ultimately, though, it was the sock-monkey hat of seat-sitter Toni Donaldson of the Privy Princesses that made all the difference as pushers Diane Miller and LeAnne Woolf careened across the finish line with her in Ol’ Yeller and into a nearby outhouse in a time of 2:22. Their trophy was accompanied by a $100 prize gathered from spectators and Snowmobile Club members who really wanted to see old broads pushing outhouses.

The OCR&P Committee was chaired by Myrna Clarke, who also served as emcee for the event. Trophies from the Snowmobile Club were designed and lovingly handcrafted by Toni Thompson and Kurt Clarke with highest possible skill sets, as they both were instructed at the Billybob School in Tools (BSiT).

Mutterings are already under way for how outhouses will be better next year. Oh, and how all pushers will be in so much better shape. In the meantime, however, all-terrain outhouses are looking to be tested during the 4th of July Flea Market (July 5-8), perhaps in combination with bed races. Imagine pulling on your onesie, settling down for a hair-raising nap across rough ground, struggling out of your onesie, grabbing your giant toothbrush, and heading for the outhouse to retrace your adventurous route.

2012 Sumpter Poker Run

It’s Poker Run time again in Sumpter!

Saturday, February 16th, 2013 from 7:00 am to 2:30 pm

The Poker Run will be held regardless of the weather - it will not be cancelled! 

This year, the Sumpter Snowmobile Club will be adding a little extra fun….

The 1st Annual Sumpter Outhouse Races in downtown Sumpter – across from the Gold Post. The races will be held between 2:30 and 3:00 pm. All outhouses must be registered and inspected before the races. See the rules and get more information here.

The Sumpter Valley Blue Mountain Snowmobile Club held a potluck and meeting this past weekend to make final plans for the poker run. See the photos of the meeting below…….

This year, there will be 6 poker run stations in town, and two stations out on the trail.  However, you can only draw 7 cards, which means  you will need to choose which poker run stations you would like to visit.  This year’s poker run stations are:

The Stage Stop Gas Station, The Gold Post, The Depot Inn, The Elkhorn, The Sumpter Museum, Homestead Realty, Inc.  and two stations on the trail.

Once you have drawn 7 cards, you will need to turn your ticket in by 2:30 pm at the Sumpter Community Schoolhouse. Those with the best poker hands win the money……

The total purse for the Poker Run is $3,000.00 guaranteed!

You are not required to go out on the trail in order to participate in the poker run. In fact, you are not required to even ride or own a snowmobile in order to join the fun!

There will also be a Winter Bazaar and Rummage Sale at the Sumpter Municipal Museum from 9 am – 4 pm. Vendors are by donation only…..some table space is still available if you hurry! To reserves space call 541-894-2355.

Friends of Sumpter Valley Community will be holding a baked goods sale on Friday, February 15th from 6-8 pm during advance poker run ticket sales at the Sumpter Community Schoolhouse – 475 N. Mill St. (just above the Stage Stop Gas Station)

On Saturday, the FSVC will also be selling breakfast burritos from 7-10 am at the Sumpter Community Schoolhouse.

There will also be a rummage sale.

There will be a Poker Run Card Station inside the museum so you can draw your card, get your ticket punched and browse the bazaar too!
