Sumpter has approx. 350 miles of snowmobile trails, most of which run on Wallowa Whitman National Forest roads and are maintained by the Sumpter Valley Blue Mountain Snowmobile Club. Our volunteers work to keep these snowmobile trails groomed throughout the season. The Oregon State Snowmobile Association (OSSA) administers a state wide grooming program for the state of Oregon under agreement with the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT). OSSA in turn has a contract with each grooming club to groom and maintain the trail system in their area. OSSA purchases the equipment and places it in the care of each grooming club. OSSA develops a budget for each grooming club and disburses funds to them in equal draws upon receipt of documentation of work performed and expenses paid. In addition to the club budget, an additional amount is given to each club to perform required summer maintenance on the equipment to assure that it is ready to go on the snow for the next season. The funds for this program are disbursed to OSSA by ODOT. Once the money is disbursed, OSSA then reports back to ODOT on how these funds are used. The money comes from snowmobile gas tax and a small amount from snowmobile registrations. This money goes into an ODOT fund for the program. The OSSA program is successful because of the incredible volunteers in snowmobile clubs across the state that operate equipment and maintain a total of 6,410 trails in Oregon.

You may ride the snowmobile trails all winter and never see the groomer……….but when you do meet the Tucker Snocat Groomer, you’ll know it!
When snow conditions are right, (and sometimes when they aren’t) grooming volunteers will be out grooming almost on a daily basis. Please watch your speed, and be careful when you turn those corners. If you appreciate riding on groomed trails all winter, be sure to thank the trail groomers when you see them. Another way to show your support for all the hard work and time our club volunteers invest in keeping the snowmobile trails groomed, is to join the club…..You don’t have to live in Sumpter to be a member!
